The first chambers were developed at the Seminar for Statistics of ETH Zurich, initially conceived as testbeds for causal inference algorithms. They were presented in an open-access paper in Nature Machine Intelligence, together with their open-source blueprints and a collection of public datasets.

Despite the interest from scientists across ML, AI and Statistics, we quickly realized that most research groups would be unable to build and maintain devices like the chambers. And thus, Causal Chamber® was born: to provide our community with physical testbeds to test algorithms, refine theory and drive progress.
